03 / The payback math
Impact openings are one of the few Florida upgrades with a calculable payback
Under state law, insurers must offer credits for documented wind-resistive construction, and opening protection is frequently the single largest of those credits. You document the features with a wind mitigation inspection on form OIR-B1-1802, hand the form to your insurer, and the credit is applied to the wind portion of your premium.
One detail worth planning around: the opening-protection credit generally requires every glazed opening to be protected, windows, doors, and garage included. A single unprotected opening can shrink or erase the credit. These are cited ranges, not promises, and your policy will vary.

04 / Engineering literacy
What "impact-rated" actually means
An impact-rated window is not a claim that glass cannot break. It is a system tested to fracture on the outside while a laminated interlayer holds the pane together and keeps wind and debris out of the house. Products earn approval by passing large and small missile impact tests and cyclic pressure cycling under ASTM E1886 and ASTM E1996, then carrying a statewide Florida Product Approval or a Miami-Dade Notice of Acceptance.
The number to ask about is the design pressure, or DP, rating: the wind load in pounds per square foot the unit resists, tested to 1.5 times that figure. Coastal Sarasota and Manatee openings generally call for higher DP than inland ones. That is the vocabulary a good installer speaks.
05 / What it costs
Honest cost ranges, not a sticker
Published 2025 and 2026 Florida cost guides put a standard installed impact window around $1,000 to $2,500 each, so whole-home projects commonly run from about $15,000 to $60,000 or more depending on the count and size of openings. Frame material, glass package, and required design pressure move the number. Treat any figure as a starting point and compare itemized quotes.
| One standard impact window | $1,000 to $2,500 |
| Smaller home, 15 to 20 windows | $12,000 to $25,000 |
| Larger home, 25 to 40 openings | $25,000 to $55,000 |
| Impact sliding glass door | $2,200 to $12,000+ |
06 / My Safe Florida Home
Free inspections, and a grant for those who qualify
The state's My Safe Florida Home program funds free wind mitigation inspections for eligible site-built single-family homes and offers matching grants for opening protection and roof work. As of July 2026 the grant pays $2 for every $1 a homeowner contributes, up to a $10,000 grant, with grant eligibility restricted to low-income and moderate-income households. Higher-income owners can still use the free inspection.
If you do not qualify for the grant, the insurance-credit math stands on its own, which is the durable reason most owners do this. Confirm current terms at mysafeflhome.com.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Do impact windows really lower my Florida insurance premium?
Florida law requires insurers to offer credits for documented wind-resistive features, and opening protection is often the single largest credit. A wind mitigation inspection records what you have, and your insurer applies the discount. Reported savings vary widely by carrier, county, and coverage, so your policy will vary.
Are impact windows the same as unbreakable glass?
No. Impact-rated windows are impact-resistant, not proof against every storm. The outer glass can crack on impact while a laminated inner layer holds the pane together and keeps the opening sealed. That behavior is the design, and it is tested to published standards, not a promise that nothing can fail.
What does a whole-home project usually cost in Sarasota or Manatee County?
Florida cost guides put standard installed impact windows around $1,000 to $2,500 each, so whole-home projects commonly land between roughly $15,000 and $60,000 depending on the number and size of openings. Frame material, glass package, and design pressure all move the number. Get itemized quotes before budgeting.
Do I need every opening protected to get the insurance credit?
For the opening-protection credit, insurers generally require all glazed openings, including windows, exterior doors, and the garage door, to carry qualifying protection. A single unprotected opening can reduce or remove that credit, which is why many owners plan a whole-home scope rather than a partial one.
Is Sun Coast Impact Windows a contractor?
No. We are a free matching service. We connect Sarasota and Manatee County homeowners with independent, Florida-licensed impact window and door installers, then step back. All work, licensing, permitting, and warranties come from the installer you choose to hire.
